Wellness al Estilo Mexicano: 7 Cosas que Vivir en Puerto Escondido Te Enseña Sobre una Vida Saludable
Today, as Mexico celebrates its Independence, it feels like a good moment to celebrate something else we love about this amazing country: the way life here can remind us what wellness actually looks like.
No otro suplemento. No otro wearable. No otra rutina matutina de 17 pasos.
Movimiento. Sol. Comida real. Comunidad. Tiempo al aire libre. Conexión. Descanso. Música. Risas.

Puerto Escondido has a way of reminding us that wellness can be simpler, more social and a lot more connected to everyday life.

In Puerto Escondido, movement often happens naturally - in the ocean, on the beach and throughout everyday life.
You walk to breakfast. Swim in the ocean. Surf before work. Carry your board down the beach. Dance later than you planned. Take a yoga class. Ride a bike. Go for a run. Join a salsa lesson. Train for 30 minutes. Walk home.
One of the simplest ways to build a healthier life is to stop thinking only in terms of “exercise” and start looking for more opportunities to move. The best movement routine might be the one that extends beyond the workout itself.
2. Come comida que todavía parece comida

Puerto's markets like this one at Mercado Zicatela are a colorful reminder that some of the best food available to us is also some of the simplest.
But living here offers a useful reminder: some of the best food available to us is also some of the simplest. Start with ingredients. Eat plenty of plants. Find good sources of protein. Enjoy your food.
And yes, have the taco.
3. Sal al aire libre. Mucho.

Another Puerto sunset - and another reason to stop what you're doing and get outside.
This one admittedly isn't difficult in Puerto Escondido. The ocean is right there. So are the beaches, palm trees, spectacular sunsets and the kind of weather that regularly makes walls seem unnecessary.
Aquí la vida sucede afuera. Café afuera. Desayuno afuera. Trabajo afuera. Entrenamiento afuera. Cena afuera.
Compare that with how much of modern life can happen without ever leaving a building: wake up, car, office, car, gym, home, Netflix, bed.
4. La comunidad también es bienestar

Sometimes you come for the workout and stay for the people — community is part of wellness too.
We talk constantly about workouts, nutrition, sleep and recovery. We should probably talk more about people.
And this may be one of the things we appreciate most about life in Puerto. People stop and talk. Meals stretch longer than expected. Friends introduce friends. Someone you met at a class becomes someone you see at the beach, who becomes someone you have coffee with, who somehow ends up at your birthday three months later.
That isn't an accidental side effect of wellness. It is wellness.
5. No tienes que ganarte el descanso

Recovery isn't time away from wellness. Sometimes slowing down is exactly what your body needs.
Puerto can also teach you a lesson that occasionally drives anyone with a tightly organized schedule completely crazy: not everything needs to happen immediately.
Hay valor en bajar el ritmo.
That doesn't mean abandoning ambition or adopting “mañana” as your entire productivity system. It means remembering that human beings aren't designed to operate at maximum output every waking hour.
Training creates stress. Work creates stress. Travel creates stress. Life creates stress. Recovery is when your body gets the opportunity to respond to it.
Duerme. Estira. Tómate un día más tranquilo. Siéntate en una hamaca. Lee.
Rest isn't the opposite of progress. Sometimes it's part of it.
6. Celebra

Noche Mexicana brings movement and tradition together for Día de la Independencia de México at SHRED Wellness.
Wellness culture can become strangely joyless. Don't eat this. Don't drink that. Wake up earlier. Track more. Optimize everything.
Mexico offers a pretty good reminder that a healthy life should also be a life worth celebrating. Music. Food. Family. Friends. Traditions. Dancing. Gathering together. These aren't necessarily distractions from wellness. They're part of being well.
It's one reason today's Mexican Independence celebrations feel so aligned with something we already believe at SHRED: movement and wellness don't have to exist separately from culture, community and fun.
Tonight, we're putting that idea into practice with our special Noche Mexicana at Hotel Néctar. Rather than simply putting a Mexican flag on a regular class and calling it a celebration, we're bringing movement and tradition together: Yin Yoga a la luz de las velas accompanied by guitarra acústica en vivo, with breath, melody, stillness and a practice inspired by the theme of independence.
It's still yoga. It's still wellness. But it's also music, culture, connection and celebration.
And maybe that's the point: wellness doesn't always have to look like wellness.
7. Deja de intentar optimizarlo todo

Sometimes wellness looks less like optimization and more like sunshine, friends, coconuts and time by the ocean.
We love plenty of the tools modern wellness has given us. Wearables can be useful. Performance data can be interesting. Supplements can have a place. Cold plunges can feel incredible. Tracking your training can help you improve. Understanding nutrition can change your health.
But they're tools. They're not wellness itself.
Sometimes the constant pursuit of optimization becomes another source of stress. Did I get enough deep sleep? Did I hit my protein target? Was my HRV down? Did I spend enough time in Zone 2? Should I cold plunge before or after training? Did my morning sunlight happen within the optimal number of minutes after waking?
There is a place for data and optimization. But there should also be a place for intuition, spontaneity and simply enjoying your life.
Move your body. Eat mostly good food. Sleep. Go outside. Build relationships. Rest when you need to. Laugh often. Do things you enjoy.
Perhaps that's one of the biggest things living in Puerto Escondido has taught us at SHRED. Wellness doesn't have to feel like work.
Puede suceder descalzo. Afuera. Con amigos.
Between a morning SHRED workout and an afternoon at the beach. Over a meal that lasts longer than expected. Dancing when you weren't planning to dance. Swimming because the ocean looked too good not to. Watching another Puerto sunset that somehow still makes everyone stop and look.
None of this means abandoning goals, training plans or the desire to become fitter, stronger and healthier. It means remembering why we want those things in the first place.
Para vivir bien.
And on a day when we celebrate Mexico, that feels like something worth raising a glass to.
¡Viva México! 🇲🇽
Get Fit. Have Fun. That's SHRED.
